At Shinji Budo Kai we can teach both pure Judo and Aikido and also our own style, Shinjido. Shinji Budo Kai means "Danny's Martial Way." Ray's Martial Arts School was named Shinji Budo Kai in tribute to Danny DaCosta his Sensei and mentor. Danny developed the principles of Shinjido.
Judo (the gentle
way)
Judo is a Japanese wrestling style and was developed in Japan by Dr Jigoro Kano towards the end of the 19th century and has evolved from being a martial art into one of the world’s most popular sports. Since its inclusion in the 1964 Olympic Games Judo has progressed rapidly and is without doubt the world’s most popular combat sport.
Aikido (the way of spirit and
harmony)
Morihei Ueshiba developed Aikido more or less at the same time as Judo; Aikido however has remained a pure martial art, has no competition element and emphasises co-operation and respect between partners.
Shinji Budo Kai Our philosophy is not simply to follow the traditional teachings but to re-examine the principles that make them work. We therefore include in Shinji Budo Kai a variety of specialist skills based on Shinjido.Once mastered these skills make throws appear effortless, by using the principles of attacking the weak line and gravity-assisted power.
Training with Shinji Budo Kai is much more than a sport; it is also effective as an educational system in both physical and moral spheres. Shinji Budo Kai training is an ideal form of physical exercise and serves as a great cardiovascular workout, improving, stamina, general health and overall fitness. Physical strength is also increased as a direct result of manipulating the movement of your training partner. As well as enhanced power, a Shinji Budo Kai pupil will improve their flexibility. For the same reasons the balance and posture of pupils will be enhanced. Physical co-ordination can be seen to develop dramatically from participation in Shinji Budo Kai training; reflexes are also improved together with mental reaction time.
The moral benefits
of Shinji Budo Kai are a direct result of the transition of Judo
from Jujitsu to “Do” or “ways of life”.
Judo has a strict code of ethics and a humanitarian philosophy.
Judo teaches outstanding examples of good character and honest
conduct. Judo is ultimately concerned for the well being of both
the individual and the community. One of Judo’s guiding
principles is“mutual benefit and prosperity”. Kano
believed that the diligent practice of Judo should lead to the
realization that one could not progress at the expense of others;
only mutual prosperity offered the key to any real progress in
life. These principles still under pin the art today.
Shinji Budo Kai is an ideal pursuit
for all ages, male or female.
Confidence and self-esteem are
improved as pupils progress through the ranks. The very nature of
the grading system ensures that the next goal is always realistic
and achievable with effort. The grading system also ensures
that
all participants have a positive learning experience.
Budo etiquette instils respect,
modesty, politeness and general social skills in all
participants. Although Judo and Aikido are derived from
techniques that were traditionally used in Japan on the
battlefield these techniques have been refined and modified to
make them safe. The object of Judo contest being to throw the
opponent onto their back, this wins the bout. Naturally pupils
are taught to fall in such a manner that they land safely, great
emphasis is placed on mastering the several methods of
breakfalling since this gives pupils the confidence to
participate fully. It is also possible to win by pinning the
opponent to the mat for a period of twenty-five seconds. Aikido
training is, based on movements derived from the Japanese sword
and staff battle arts. Competition is less important as pupils
co-operate with one another to enhance their
learning.
Shinji Budo Kai will also actively reduce bullying. Bullies can
only operate in relatively uncontrolled environments and the
disciplined Dojo (training hall), removes them from their
position of power. At the same time theyt hemselves learn
discipline and self-control, quite often whilst gaining a new
found respect for people who previously may have been a
target for their bullying.
